Indochina overview
Travellers’ boat chugs along a rain-river that meanders through a soggy valley. In the steamy mist the travelers catch a glimpse of steep mountains covered with seemingly impenetrable rain forests. On all sides of the travelers, snakes slither, monkeys screech, and lizards mimic the human voice. The traveler are in Indochina, a land rich in history, resources and people.

Indochina stretches more than 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) from north to south and almost 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) from east to west. The countries of western Indochina include three countries, that is, Myanmar, Malaysia and Thailand, and the countries of eastern Indochina consist of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

Vietnam. To the east of Laos lies Vietnam, a country the size of New Mexico. Vietnam consists of two flat and densely populated deltas separated by a narrow strip of sparsely populated mountains. Many people living near the delta at the mouth of the Red River in the north have long-standing ties to the People’s Republic of China. This area is the site of Vietnam’s capital city of Hanoi. People in the delta at the mouth of the Mekong River in the south have traditionally resisted Chinese influences. Vietnam is the country with tourism potentials thanks to the gift of Gods. Along the length of the country from North with Hanoi, Halong, Sapa, just to name a few to the Center with Hue, Danang, Hoi An…and to the South, tourists can explore various landscapes and customs of each area.

Laos. Mountains and rain forests dominate Laos, a landlocked country slightly larger than Utah. The most habitable lands lie along the Mekong River. About half of the Laotian people are Lao, a people related to Thais. The Lao language serves as the nation’s official language. Most of the workers are farmers, and rice ranks as the dominant crop. The Mekong floods in summer, making conditions on the floodplain ideal for growing wet rice. Fish from the Mekong provides protein for the Lao diet of rice and other grains. Laos has a lot of beautiful sites including historical sites and natural landscapes.

Cambodia is located in the southern Indochina between Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, is about the size of Missouri. Most of Cambodians trace their descent to the Khmers. Almost all the people practice Buddhism. Most of the country’s populations live on the fertile plains of the Mekong River and the Tonle Sap, or Great Lake. The temples of Angkor literally rise out of the jungle and are a magnet for visitors to Cambodia. Angkor Wat is the largest and most famous of the temples, and visitors could easily spend a week exploring the hundreds of other exquisite structures. Phnom Penh is a bustling city, often overshadowed by glamorous Angkor. It is a city of contrasts with fine colonial architecture side by side with ramshackle streets.
